Artist Statement

As a native Californian, I have always felt a deep connection to the natural landscape and the experience of ‘place’. Pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in Landscape Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley allowed me to develop my own creative response to this inner sense. Training in drawing and design principles related to space, scale, and the ‘felt’ environment have enriched my practice as a Landscape Architect as well as my painting and printmaking.

I had the opportunity to live and work in Scotland following the completion of my education. This experience, as well as travel in Scandinavia, had a strong visual influence on me. The spareness of mountain and sky, the fragile line of meeting of earth and sea, and the subtle color palette of the Nordic landscape all spoke to me, and continue to inform my painting and monotype work.

Painting and printmaking are for me an exercise in the contemplation of nature and an exploration of inner experience. I work with images from the natural environment as well as those from memory. The sense of ‘place’ found in this process becomes an invitation to explore consciousness and vision.
